Tips
For Beginners:
|
This hobby can be frustrating. Especially at
first. So much information out there, so many
people who say "do it this way" Who to believe
& what to believe?! If you don't know of
anyone personally to help you it can seem impossible
to do. When I
started my first saltwater tank, the store owner kept giving me bad information
which resulted in my fish dying constantly. I found later that
his attitude was “If it dies, they’ll come back &
replace it…another buck.” Had I not overheard
this with my own ears as he was talking with an
employee, I would never have believed it. That was
the last day I did business with them. I
persisted and after much trial & error (many looses
& heartache...not to mention the $ lost) I managed to dial things in for
myself & my tanks became healthy reef environments
that run with almost no intervention. I now
work full-time helping others achieve the same
success as well as aquaculture corals which are the
excess of the abundant life grown in my thriving
systems.

Find someone, whether a
well known published authority or dealer (like
AquaCorals) that can show you consistent, long term
success with a reef tank.
"Please Choose Your Mentor Carefully!"
This person and the relationship you establish with
them will greatly affect whether
you will be
successful as a reef aquarium hobbyist.
NOTE: If a person has
never owned a successful reef aquarium it is
impossible to teach others how to have one.
Bewarned! Anyone can "say" anything.
Before I chose a mentor I personally would want to
"see" their tank(s) over a period of time. If
corals & or fish are missing from a tank on a return
visit only to have been replaced with something
new...I'd be concerned.
Click the 220 gallon tank picture on the
home page of this
web site. It opens a page with multiple
pictures showing this tank age...with the same fish
& corals...growing! |
Listen to your chosen mentor and do not take into account
conflicting opinions of others. Until you can
confidently diagnose typical aquarium situations and
the appropriate course of action, as your mentor
would, do not proceed on your own. Especially
until you also clearly understand exactly WHY they
do what they do. By no means am I suggesting not
to read books/magazines & researching the Internet
on all topics, but I highly recommend focusing on
animal needs/care (coral, invert or fish) & avoid
what would be other's aquarium philosophies. |
Important
Note:
The Internet, books & magazine articles are great
sources of information but be warned! ... there is just
as much bad/outdated information as there is good.
Inexperienced hobbyists should look to their chosen
mentor
to help sort through it all!
Stop by AquaCorals during business hours or e-mail
anytime with any
questions you may have.
"The only dumb questions ....
are ones that aren't asked."
Allow me the privilege of being your mentor & guide you with "proven" methods of
setting up & maintaining successful reef aquariums.
